Why We Built Hero Vision: From Guesswork to Proof of Service

Discover why Hauler Hero built Hero Vision, an AI-powered camera solution that helps waste teams verify service, reduce disputes, review exceptions, and turn truck footage into operational clarity.

Why We Built Hero Vision: Because the Truth Is Already on the Truck

Every waste operation knows the call.

A customer says their pickup was missed. The driver says the cart wasn’t out. A supervisor tries to piece together what happened. Customer service is stuck in the middle. And before anyone has a clear answer, the company may send a truck back out just to avoid escalation.

That single go-back might not seem like much. But across hundreds of routes, thousands of stops, and weeks of service calls, uncertainty becomes expensive.

That is why we started building Hero Vision.

At Hauler Hero, we believe the truck already sees the truth. The challenge is making that information easy to access, review, and act on inside the same operational system teams already use to run routes, manage customers, and bill for service.

The Problem: Waste Teams Have Too Much Guesswork

Waste and recycling operations generate constant questions:

  • Was the stop serviced?
  • Was the cart blocked?
  • Was the container overloaded?
  • Was there contamination?
  • Did the customer set out extra material?
  • Does this account need more service?
  • Should this issue become a billable item?

Without visual evidence, many of these questions turn into disputes. Drivers rely on memory. Customer service relies on notes. Dispatch relies on phone calls. Billing may never see the full context.

Hero Vision was created to reduce that uncertainty.

The First Step: Bringing Truck Video Into the Operation

Hero Vision is Hauler Hero’s truck-based computer vision product. It uses cameras mounted on collection trucks to help identify service issues, prove what happened at the stop, and surface potential revenue opportunities like overages, contamination, and extra material.

The foundation is camera integration.

Today, Hero Vision can bring live truck video and short clips into Hauler Hero’s Route Manager and map view. Clips and detections can be tied back to specific trucks, giving operations teams a clearer way to investigate service events without leaving the platform.

This matters because video is only useful if people can actually find it when they need it.

A clip buried in a separate camera portal may help eventually. A clip connected directly to the route, truck, work order, and customer record helps immediately.

From Video Clips to Work Order Context

The first version of Hero Vision focused on connecting video clips to work orders.

That may sound simple, but it is a major step forward. When service evidence is tied to the work being performed, the office can understand the situation faster.

Instead of asking:

“Who was on that route?”
“Which truck was it?”
“What time did they pass that address?”
“Where is the video?”
“Did anyone save the clip?”

Teams can start from the work order and review the relevant evidence in context.

This helps dispatch, customer service, and supervisors respond with more confidence.

Why AI Matters Here

Hero Vision is not just about watching videos. It is about helping teams find the moments that matter.

A truck may capture hours of footage in a single day. No dispatcher or supervisor has time to manually review all of it. The opportunity is using AI to surface likely exceptions automatically.

That is where computer vision becomes valuable.

Hero Vision is being developed to help detect events such as:

  • contamination
  • overages
  • missed pickups
  • blocked containers
  • extra material
  • other service issues that affect operations or billing

The goal is not to replace human review. The goal is to reduce the amount of searching humans have to do.

AI can flag the event. The team can confirm or reject it. Once confirmed, that event can become part of the operational record—and eventually support faster follow-up, cleaner billing, and better customer communication.

Turning Exceptions Into Action

A service issue only matters if the team can act on it.

That is why one of the next major focuses for Hero Vision is the exceptions review workflow. Camera-flagged events should not sit in a black box. They need to be reviewed, confirmed, rejected, and routed into the right next step.

For example:

  • A contamination event may need documentation
  • An overage may become a billable extra
  • A blocked container may explain a missed pickup
  • A repeated issue may require customer follow-up
  • A confirmed exception may become a work order line item

This is where Hero Vision connects directly to Hauler Hero’s bigger mission: reducing manual work across operations.

The value is not simply detecting a problem. The value is turning that detection into a workflow.

Built Around the Hardware Haulers Already Use

Waste fleets do not all use the same camera systems. Some already have Samsara. Others use Motive, Geotab, Third Eye, or another provider. Some may want an on-truck compute option managed through Hauler Hero in the future.

That is why Hero Vision is being built with a hardware-agnostic strategy.

The goal is to work with existing truck camera investments where possible, while also developing future options for operators that need a dedicated Hauler Hero-supported device.

This flexibility matters because haulers should not have to rip out their entire hardware stack to get better operational visibility.

Why We Decided to Build Hero Vision

We built Hero Vision because the biggest waste operation problems often come down to missing context.

A missed pickup dispute is not just a customer service issue. It can become a go-back, a credit, a driver frustration point, and a billing question.

An overloaded container is not just an operational issue. It may be a missed revenue opportunity.

Contamination is not just a route note. It can affect customer education, municipal reporting, and downstream processing.

Hero Vision helps bring proof, context, and automation into those moments.

The Bigger Picture: AI for Waste Operations

Hero Vision is part of Hauler Hero’s broader AI direction, alongside products like Hero Chat and Hero Routing.

Each product addresses a different operational problem:

  • Hero Vision focuses on what happened at the stop
  • Hero Chat focuses on helping teams answer and act on operational information
  • Hero Routing focuses on smarter routing possibilities over time

Hero Vision is the most mature commercially because the use case is immediate: trucks are already in the field, cameras are already capturing critical information, and operations teams already need faster answers.

The Bottom Line

Waste operations do not need more disconnected data. They need better answers.

Hero Vision was built around a simple idea: the evidence already exists on the truck. Hauler Hero’s job is to bring that evidence into the workflows where it can actually help.

That means fewer unresolved disputes, better service verification, faster exception review, stronger billing support, and more visibility into what is really happening in the field.

Because when the truth is on the truck, your team should not have to search all day to find it.
